Program Title

Indexing in the Age of eDoc and Mobile Devices? Absolutely!

A joint meeting of STC-Boston and the New England Chapter of the American Society for Indexing (NEASI)

Description

Today, virtually all technical documentation is electronic. We have manuals in PDF, online and Web-based help, wikis, blogs, call center databases, and now, e-books and mobile docs. In this environment, is technical indexing obsolete?

Far from it! In the electronic doc world, more information is published faster than ever before. And it’s becoming harder to find this information quickly and efficiently. Despite the growing perception that text-based search is good enough, it’s a difficult process for us to wade through a gazillion hits to find the exact information we need at a second’s notice. This is where indexing fits into the picture. Well-crafted indexes guide us to the information we need, when we need it.

So, how are these modern indexes created? What is the role of the indexer? Cheryl Landes, a full-time freelance technical writer and indexer, will answer these questions and show examples of indexes in this new, fast-paced world of publishing. She will also describe the tools used to create these indexes.

Speaker's Bio

Cheryl Landes, an STC Fellow and award-winning technical writer, is the owner of Tabby Cat Communications in Seattle (http://www.tabbycatco.com). She has 20 years of experience as a technical writer and indexer in several industries: computer software, energy savings, marine transportation, manufacturing, and the trade press. She is a member of National Board of Directors of the American Society for Indexing and active in NEASI and the Pacific Northwest Chapter. She is also active in three STC chapters, including Boston, and on the international level. She speaks frequently at STC and ASI meetings throughout the United States and Canada.
